Their Research & Development Belgium (in Gent) is a center of excellence for silicon photonics and for MEMS. Aiming at significantly reduce the cost of these components by investing aggressively in silicon photonics and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) research and development and implementing solutions based on these technologies, the team at their R&D Belgium is looking to strengthen their team with a MEMS Expert (Principal level).

The Main Responsibilities:

  • Electro-mechanical design of MEMS devices for concept through to production for applications in Optical Communications and Consumer Products
  • Work collaboratively with other parts of the extended MEMS team internally and at external partners


You hold a Msc degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences (a PhD is a strong asset) and a minimum of 10 years post-degree MEMS design experience and at least 3 years of experience at principal level. You have hands-on experiences in MEMS design, MEMS design in optical (e.g. micromirror), acoustic and/or inertial (e.g. gyroscope) products.

You also have an Industrial experience or experience of leading commercial contracts with industry.

Technical skills

Sound grasp of MEMS transduction and associated MEMS process, test and reliability principles

  • Extensive experience of electrostatic actuation is essential
  • Experience of piezoelectric and electromagnetic actuation is an advantage
  • A sound knowledge of enhancing and verifying MEMS reliability is desirable

Proven track record in developing innovative MEMS designs

  • A track record of designs transitioning to production is an advantage
  • Strong awareness of Intellectual Property is desirable

Advanced skills in simulation using leading CAD design packages for MEMS

  • Extensive experience of finite element MEMS device simulation
    • expertise in using COMSOL Multiphysics is an advantage
  • Expertise in system level simulation with reduced order models and linking to other simulation packages is an advantage (e.g. using Python)
  • Experience of working with a captive industrial or commercial MEMS foundry is essential

You have strong analytical skills with an ability to work effectively both independently and with other parts of the extended team in Europe and China. You have excellent written and oral communication skills and you’re a strong team-player. You also have an eye for detail but also able to take high-level perspective when appropriate. You are an organized and a structured worker. You are determined, detail-oriented and like new challenges. You are conducting by a continuous improvement spirit.

You are fluent in English (written and spoken) and knowledge of Dutch or Chinese is an asset.
